Dance Teachers Lodge celebrates its 65th Anniversary

W Bro David Smith LGR talks to Arena

On Monday 13th September, at Freemasons Hall, London, in the magnificent and opulent Temple 10, Terpsichore Lodge No 7454 celebrated its 65th Anniversary since its consecration.

To mark this special occasion, the Lodge was honoured to have in attendance the Metropolitan Grand Inspector, W Bro Paul Brown PJGD, with his Escorting Officer, two Metropolitan Grand Stewards and many other distinguished Brethren. The meeting was very well attended not only by members and guests but also by representatives of the Lodges that Terpsichore descended from in its Masonic family tree.

A Ceremony of Raising was performed with the usual theatrical flair. The day was concluded with a wonderful and harmonious Festive Board at the Doubletree by Hilton, Southampton Row.

Terpsichore Lodge was founded and consecrated in 1956. It was set up by a group of dancing teachers, dance musicians and those associated with the dance world. To this day, ballroom, Latin American and old time dance professionals, along with musicians, all come together to share their two passions: dancing and Freemasonry. Many famous names from the dancing world have been associated with the Lodge through the years.

The name Terpsichore was chosen to reflect their passion. In Greek mythology, Terpsichore was one of the nine muses and the patron of lyric poetry and dancing. In current English, the word ‘terpsichorean’ means ‘of or relating to dance’. What an apt name indeed for such a distinguished Lodge.

With the popularity of BBC Strictly Come Dancing, the Lodge is going from strength to strength, with candidates waiting to join.
